Bali is a land of contrasts: a tiny island of white- as well as black-sand beaches, active volcanoes, thick forests and lush terrain blanketed in rice fields. But it may be the spiritualism and creativity of its people that leave the strongest impression of Bali. Hindu temple festivals occur nearly daily in Balinese villages large and small, their colourful pageantry providing an outlet for the devout to express themselves through dance, art and music. Creative expression plays a role in secular life, too, with many of Bali’s people earning their livelihoods as artisans. Spiritual catharsis is alive and well in Bali, infusing life with a sense of calm that is rare in modern times.
