We dig our feet into the sand of its shores, for no particular reason. We frolic in its shallows or stand with board underfoot as its waves end their epic journey. We delve beneath its surface to explore and interact with the otherworldly life that inhabits it. And sometimes we just stare at it, perhaps with a cocktail in hand or from the vantage point of a beach chair. On June 8, World Oceans Day, we have the opportunity to celebrate it.
It’s a perfect time to reflect on all the moments when the ocean has played a part, whether time spent socialising by it with friends and family or more solitary moments when it brought peace or inspiration. It’s also a reminder that we need to be actively involved in preserving it so that future generations can experience all that it offers. Although this year’s theme, Youth: The Next Wave for Change, is meant to inspire a younger generation to get involved in conservation, there are opportunities for people of all ages to participate. Visit World Oceans Days’ website to learn more about its mission and local events from all corners.
