Learn to paddle an outrigger canoe Hawaiian style at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, and you’ll get a sense of how Polynesian explorers ventured across the Pacific in these swift and lean boats. Mahinis (newcomers) find out how to row and chant while guides tell a wala’au, or “talking story”; seeing reef systems, sea turtles and manta rays in the open water makes the experience feel all the more authentic.

For a resort-at-sea experience, charter the Four Seasons Explorer and discover the waters and islands of the Maldives. The 129-foot (40-metre), three-deck catamaran embarks on three-, four- and seven-night cruises from Four Seasons Resort Kuda Huraa; from there, visit dive sites and reef systems, secluded beaches, and remote island communities in the atolls en route to Four Seasons Resort Landaa Giraavaru. The Explorer has the first-rate attention to detail and amenities that Four Seasons is known for, and then some: The luxury vessel also has an on-board PADI 5-Star Dive Centre for diving and snorkelling adventures.

Four Seasons Resort Langkawi offers naturalist-led kayaking tours of the island’s diverse ecosystem and the Andaman Sea. Venture through tributaries into the lush mangrove forests of UNESCO-protected Kilim Geopark; another tour has you going from a saltwater lake through a 49-foot (15-metre) cave tunnel to the sea. Kayaking offers the best vantage point for seeing the many dramatic geological features and fascinating wildlife that make Langkawi a paradise for nature lovers.

Lisbon has a long and rich maritime heritage that continues today as the port city hosts sailing regattas such as the Volvo Ocean Race. With the proximity of Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon to the Tagus River and the oceanfront, opportunities for sailing are plentiful. The Concierge can arrange for private sailing lessons, or book an excursion on the Tagus River for seeing historic points such as Praça do Comércio and Belém.
