Now that I’m a mom, I understand why people go on vacation to do nothing. With my husband busy at a work conference and my daughter at grandma’s, my son Eliot and I embarked on the trip of a lifetime. The destination: Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. The objective: to relax (yes, even with a one year old in tow).

I daydreamed on the plane, but the place was truly better than I could’ve imagined: Polynesian islets and the calm turquoise waters peppered with over-water bungalows stretching out from the beaches; at night, strings of lit-up bungalows resembling the glowing tentacles of an octopus.

Eliot’s favourite part: the peek-a-boo window in our bungalow floor, revealing a couple of colourful fish swimming in the crystalline water below. For me, it was the deck’s little ladder, where each morning I slipped into the clearest water I’d ever seen while Eliot slept.
