Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver Chef Concierge Bertine Hage shares what she believes to be the best of her seaside city.
Updated August 10, 2012—On August 9, @FourSeasons hosted another instalment of its popular #bestofcity chats on Twitter, this time featuring Chef Concierge Bertine Hage from Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver. In case you missed it, here are Bertine’s top picks for dining, arts and culture, and experiencing all the best that the lively seaside city has to offer:
Food, Dining and Nightlife
Bertine’s favourite “must-try” local dish you won’t find elsewhere: YEW’s crab tacos are to die for! If you love ice cream, try Bella Gelateria for the best 24 flavours of gelato in the city. If you need more choices, try one of the 218 flavours of ice cream at La Casa Gelato. Into hot dogs? Be sure to try a Japadog from a local food cart.
Bertine’s favourite local celebrity chef: Our very own Ned Bell at YEW, of course. Wayne Martin at Crave on Main, Giuseppe “Pino” Posteraro at Cioppino’s Mediterranean Grill & Enoteca and Vikram Vij at Vij’s are also great.
Bertine’s favourite restaurant only locals know about: Try the Salt Tasting Room in Gastown for an ever-changing menu of great wines, cheeses and meats. The Mill Marine Bistro along Coal Harbour offers chilled rose, a great bowl of mussels, and a view over the water.
Bertine’s favourite culinary gems: Thierry‘s for scrumptious macarons.
Bertine’s favourite place to dine al fresco: CinCin has a wonderful patio overlooking Robson Street.
Bertine’s favourite place for breakfast/brunch: Medina for great waffles; C Restaurant for a great brunch (especially on their patio).
Bertine’s favourite coffee shop: Caffè Artigiano has the best baristas and amazing coffee!
Bertine’s favourite romantic restaurant: Bacchus Restaurant & Lounge for a quiet, intimate dinner; Lift’s rooftop patio with a fireplace is wonderful on a warm summer night.
Bertine’s favourite unique dining experience: Eating a huge king crab at Sun Sai Wah.
Bertine’s favourite place to dine solo: At the bar at Coast or Blue Water Cafe + Raw Bar. Love the
flatbread and chowders at Coast and the sushi at Blue Water!
Bertine’s favourite kid-friendly restaurant: The Old Spaghetti Factory in Gastown.
Bertine’s favourite place for pizza: That would be Nicli Antica Pizzeria on Cordova Street for authentic Neapolitan pizza straight out of the wood-fired oven.
Bertine’s favourite place for a burger: Stackhouse Burger Bar has the best burgers. For fish lovers the crab burger is very popular.
Bertine’s favourite rooftop patio: Either Joe Fortes with its fantastic rooftop right in the midst of Robson Street—so perfect for an afternoon break after a bit of shopping.
Bertine’s favourite bar only locals know about: Bin 941 is a tiny but very popular local hangout.
Bertine’s favourite lounge: Reflections—cool décor, and unless you know about it, it’s not easy to find. Also love the lounge at Bacchus with big, oversized chairs to sink into.
Bertine’s favourite pub: Mahony & Sons at Burrard Landing. There you can sip on a nice, cool local brew while enjoying the view over the water!
Bertine’s favourite place to dance the night away: The Roxy. Great houseband!
