4 Must-Try Restaurants in Milan, Italy
Acclaimed food critic John Mariani dishes out some of the best places to go for lunch and dinner in one of the world’s best fashion capitals.
Why go: This Tuscan trattoria opened by Beatrice Mungai Ruggeri and now run by her daughters, Beatrice and Roberta, is still the favourite in the area and famous enough to have many branches around the world.
What to eat: Tagliolini pasta with fresh porcini mushrooms
Take note: Luckily located between fashion streets Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga, so you can shop till you drop, then come here for a fine meal. The business lunch is only EUR 20.
Why go: Very elegant, very refined, with a superb menu of modern cucina italiana.
What to eat: Risotto with orange, chanterelles and leeks in a Taleggio cheese sauce
Take note: The restaurant gives cooking classes on Saturday mornings.
Why go: It has been a favourite of journalists and writers for 50 years, and now it’s where you’ll find photographers and their fashion models in between shoots. You’ll also see evocative Milanese artwork throughout its belle époque décor.
What to eat: Ossobuco alla Milanese
Take note: The trattoria is known for its tranquil ambience, and people take their time relaxing here over a glass of grappa.
Why go: Since 1884, its location within the spectacular Galleria is almost reason enough to make Savini a must-go, but its cuisine, once dated, has become very refined and ideal for before or after viewing a performance at La Scala.
What to eat: Spaghetti in a duck ragu and white truffles
Take note: Attached to Savini is the less expensive Café Bistrot and gelateria serving excellent coffee, pastries and pizza.
Since the 1950s, Milan has been known as Italy’s fashion capital, where at least twice a year buyers and the media descend on the Lombardia capital to see the flamboyant runway shows held by Armani, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and others on and around Via Montenapoleone. This being Italy, lunch and dinner are taken seriously, with both chic trattorias and grand ristoranti reserved weeks in advance. But those same wonderful places stay open year round. Here are four of the best.
