Best of Beauty: Runway Looks We Love
New York Fashion Week was brimming with fresh beauty trends. To recreate the looks, just follow these easy tips.
Most of the attention during NYFW may have been focused on designers and their collections, but we couldn’t help noticing the makeup. From the beautiful pink and purple eyelids at Zero + Maria Cornejo to a clean-looking face with pronounced brows at Narciso Rodriguez, there were lots of standout looks. We polled Joe Fresh beauty consultant and fashion week makeup artist Simone Otis—who worked under beauty guru Dick Page—for her three favourites from Spring 2013, plus tips on how to recreate them.
Designer: Zero + Maria Cornejo
The look: Pretty in pink (and purple)
How to get it: Use a pretty shade of pink eyeshadow over the entire eyelid, up into the crease. Then use a dark plum shadow to create the look of a liner across the upper lash line, and add impact with a line of white liner along the inner lower lash line. Finish with a coat of mascara on upper and lower lashes and a soft application of rosy pink lipstick—try Joe Fresh Matte Lipstick—to complete the look.
Designer: Marc by Marc Jacobs
The look: A lived-in smoky eye
How to get it: Use creamy eyeshadows, choosing shades of almost-black with some glimmer and a grey/beige or medium-brown shade like Joe Fresh Pagoda. Apply the lighter shade all over the lid, and use the darker shade as a liner, softly blending it into the crease. Smudge the edges slightly to give them a lived-in look, and then coat lashes with mascara. Top off the look with a pale shade of lipstick to keep the focus on eyes.
Designer: Narciso Rodriguez
The look: Clean face, bold brows
How to get it: Before reaching for any makeup, says Otis, perform some maintenance. Start by grooming brows—remove wayward strands and comb what remains into submission—and applying a moisturiser to skin to give a healthy, glowing effect. Next, add a foundation or tinted moisturiser like Joe Fresh Sheer Tint where needed to smooth skin tone, and fill in any brow gaps with a hair-matching pencil. For the final effect, coat lashes with mascara, and dab lips with a moisturising product close to your natural lip hue.
