Tradition defines Philadelphia, but does not confine it. That is true of the Center City neighbourhood, where the Colonial-era Independence Hall and the National Constitution Center, a new interactive museum devoted to this defining legal treatise, grace the same green mall. Tradition is the hallmark of its arts community too, from the stately Charles Wilson Peale portraits at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts to the three centuries of American art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Impressionist masters of the Barnes Collection and the powerful statues of the Rodin Museum. But leave room, too, for their counterparts, like the Institute of Contemporary Art and a jazz music scene that befits Dizzy Gillespie’s career in Philadelphia.
