For all the old-money mansions and platinum-grade consumption, there’s much to be said for small pleasures in Florida’s poshest enclave. After pedalling along the frond-fringed Palm Beach Bicycle Trail, passing the backyards of the magnificent estates on Ocean Boulevard and County Road, duck into the intimate courtyards off famed Worth Avenue. Called “vias,” these snug sanctuaries, with gurgling fountains and ivy-draped jewel-box boutiques, soothe and charm. The oldest and loveliest: Via Mizner and Via Parigi. A stroll through the gardens of the island’s premier cultural venue, the Society of the Four Arts, reveals a disarmingly elegant Madonna sculpture framed by fruit trees. Over at the palatial Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, there’s an antique lace collection. For some perspective on this gilded realm, backtrack across the bridge to the diverse, commercially vibrant sprawl of West Palm Beach. From there, tony Boca Raton and celebrity-studded Jupiter are easy jaunts. While Palm Beach is legendary for old money and socialites, the town has other less well-known aspects, such as its support of the arts, and simple pleasures, such as bicycle trails and charming courtyards.
