Getting to Know Guangzhou

Local Time: 1:24 pm Local Weather: 29°C / 84°F  /  Mostly Cloudy

China’s third-largest city and the largest in South China, Guangzhou has been a global trading port on the Pearl River since 200 BC. In the 1500s, Portuguese traders called it Canton, and the city remains the seat of Cantonese culture. South China’s economic engine is still fueled by trade, along with industries such as communications, automotives, petrochemicals and electronics. As a result, the GDP of Guangdong Province, of which Guangzhou is capital, would rank 16th among the G20 nations. More Rolls-Royce motorcars are sold here than in any other single market in the world. As modern as it is historic, Guangzhou features high-speed air, rail, bus and ferry links that zip to and from nearby Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Macau. Nowhere is the modernity more noticeable than in Pearl River New City, with the soaring 600-metre Canton TV Tower, Zaha Hadid’s boulder-shaped Guangzhou Opera House, and other new museums and skyscrapers along the river. The Pearl River itself is bisected by a greenbelt nearly the size of Central Park, and the site of Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou, which overlooks the city from its bird’s-eye perch starting 70 floors above ground level. At night, the gentle river’s waters reflect both the neon lights and the classical outlines of southern China’s metropolitan gem.
