We asked Katie Allen at Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara to gather the savviest sight-seeing suggestions she could find – not just her own, but also those of the local connoisseurs, including some she works with every day at the Resort. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and the beautiful Santa Ynez Mountains on the other, Santa Barbara is one of the most coveted destinations for sunny skies, a mild climate and its own sophisticated brand of California cool.

Shopping: For Men and Women

A shopping spree is not complete without stopping by Wendy Foster in Montecito and in downtown Santa Barbara. These boutiques are full of local designer apparel and jewellery. For a more handsome wardrobe, K. Frank is great for casual or contemporary clothing. Nearby, Carroll and Co. is ideal for a sophisticated look for men. Choose from tasteful ties, sweaters and slacks.

Get Cosy with Cocktails

Lucky’s on Coast Village Road is a great place to start. Order the Grass Skirt Martini – it’s a secret martini only locals know about. Then head over to the Hungry Cat, which offers a chalkboard menu featuring a specialty cocktail made with local, fresh-squeezed juices and house-infused spirits. The oysters are the best in town, but the “Pug” burger is a great alternative for those who don’t like seafood.

Concerts, Crafts and Performing Arts

For concerts, the Santa Barbara Bowl is a great outdoor amphitheatre. Entertainers travel from around the world to play in this venue, with breathtaking views of Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean. On Sundays, stroll along Cabrillo Boulevard for the Arts and Crafts show to get a real idea of Santa Barbara’s local culture. The Granada Theater has been entertaining Santa Barbarians since the 1920s. It’s a local landmark that makes any evening entertainment much more memorable.

Family Fun

The Santa Barbara Zoo is in a wonderful location that overlooks the Andree Clarke Bird Refuge, with great views of the Santa Barbara coast. Ride the red train around the grounds and see more than 400 animals in their natural habitat. Don’t skip the gorilla exhibit! Riding bikes or surreys that can fit the whole family is another great way to spend the afternoon. Families can ride along Santa Barbara’s coastal bike path and stop by the Ty Warner Sea Center, where children can pet starfish and learn about the wonders of the sea.

I needed a nice gift for a for a friend when I was staying at the Four Seasons a few years ago – the fellows at The Bottle Shop in Montecito (1200 Coast Village Rd) were very helpful to me in picking out a bottle of vodka. Excellent selection available if you are looking for a bottle of scotch too, nice finds tucked everywhere inside.

There are three places that are must see in the Santa Barbara area. Lotusland, the former estate and gardens of a famous opera star Madame Ganna Walaska ,offers two tours 10:30 am and 1:30 p.m. Wed.-Sat. Feb. through Nov. Paseo Nuevo outdoor shopping area is wonderful, and Palazzio Restaurant is a local find, just a few blocks from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
