San Diego, California
A tranquil neighbourhood situated in southern Carlsbad, Aviara boasts uncrowded beaches and year round perfect weather. With the sights of San Diego only a half hour away, Aviara is the ideal base for a California getaway. To make the most of your time here, we asked Brittney Montano, Guest Experience Manager at Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara, North San Diego, to share recommendations for the best things to see and do in this tranquil enclave – from a trip to beautiful La Jolla to perfecting your swing on a course designed by Arnold Palmer.
Golfing in San Diego
Twelve months of perfect San Diego weather allow for ample opportunity to tee off at the Arnold Palmer–designed course at the Aviara Golf Club, just steps from the Residence Club. Whether you are a golf pro or new to the sport, the on-site Aviara Golf Academy and TaylorMade Performance Lab provide players of all levels the chance to improve their game.
San Diego shopping
For some potent retail therapy, go to the Cedros Avenue Design District in Solana Beach. This two-and-a-half block stretch has more than 85 shops boasting highly original apparel, home furnishings, and decorative treasures. With all the charm of a European side street, the leafy enclave is the hippest shopping destination in North San Diego. Soak up the District’s vibrant feel with a leisurely stroll through Leaping Lotus, a spectacular bazaar featuring more than 120 merchants and artisans.
A visit to La Jolla
Considered by many the crown jewel of Southern California beaches, La Jolla—an intimate beach haven about 30 minutes south of the Residence Club—offers calm, clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The panorama of serpentine shoreline and rugged cliffs is worth at least one roll of film—it’s often cited as the most photographed beach in San Diego.
Surf California’s waves
Take a private two-hour surfing lesson from a Surf Concierge, who’ll make your first time on the waves fun and safe. Visit Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas, where families can rent surfboards or boogie boards. Volleyball and tennis courts are also available for those who prefer dry land.
Dining at the Residence Club
Local ingredients abound at the Residence Club’s various dining venues. Experience the flavours of Southern California at Seasons Restaurant, a farm-to-table culinary delight with a seasonal menu and even a barista bar. Take your meal in the modern dining room or on the open-air veranda. Dine al fresco at Summits Grill or enjoy a cocktail at Palmera Pool. One-of-a-kind dining experiences are also available, from an elegant dinner by a private chef to a behind-the-scenes adventure at Seasons Kitchen Counter.
Local craft beers and breweries
Beer aficionados will appreciate the extensive list of artisan microbreweries that call San Diego County home. Visit, tour and taste nearby breweries such as Oceanside Ale Works, Stone Brewing Co., Port Brewing Co., Ballast Point, Iron Fist Brewing Co. and Mother Earth Brewing.
Whale watching in San Diego
From December to March, the big news along the San Diego coast is the annual migration of more than 25,000 gray whales. Heading south from Alaska to Baja, these magnificent mammals provide a memorable experience for any who spot them. To catch your glimpse, sign up for a whale-watching cruise with Flagship Cruises & Events. Naturalists from the Birch Aquarium at Scripps narrate the three-hour adventure and answer all your questions about the superstars of the sea. You may also see lively dolphins and sea lions.
Featuring more than 50 rides, shows and attractions geared towards children ages 2 to 12, LEGOLAND California Resort is an adventure into a world designed around the iconic building blocks and just 10 minutes from the Residence Club. SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park are all 35 to 40 minutes away. For those wishing to visit the nearby beaches, the Concierge offers complimentary beach toys, chairs, towels and umbrellas.
