While sound tracker Gordon Hempton says his book One Square Inch of Silence won’t change the world by itself (“It’s a highly processed block of wood,” he jokes.), Hempton does hope that it will serve as a call to action. The book describes his trip across the United States to meet with legislators in Washington, D.C., to convince them of the need to protect the nation’s national parks from intrusive noise pollution. “If I could tell [the president] one thing, it would be that we deserve quiet places protected in this nation,” he says. Listen to the quiet man discuss his passion for preserving what he considers a precious heritage: the calming and restorative power of silence.
