Of course I stopped at the Taj Mahal. Fortunately, no one got left in the bathroom on this trip!

Amid the bustle of Mumbai, I found so many beautiful things.

My first mission in Mumbai was to learn how to wrap a sari. After all, when in Mumbai . . .

Once I was dressed like a local, I ventured into the city to visit a historic section of old Bombay, Khotachiwadi. Amid the chaos of traffic, music and street vendors, this quiet community was a restful retreat. The quaint Portuguese-style wood homes have remained intact despite Mumbai’s growth over the years.

One of these homes belongs to fashion designer James Ferreira, who is known for his colourful and sensual fashions that embody the culture of his native India. Showing the same generous spirit of the other locals I’d met during my tour of the city, Ferreira hosted me for afternoon tea. We sipped chai with his mother and family, and I admired Ferreira’s collection of embroidered and embellished saris. During my visit, I was also captivated by the colourful lanterns illuminating Ferreira’s second-floor studio.

Colour is definitely the fashion here in India.
